Desireé, Apprentice Mechanic

"I prefer working with my hands."

In training at Kleyn

“Two months ago, I started at Kleyn as a workshop assistant,” says Desireé. “Right now, I mostly do smaller tasks like checking lights, replacing batteries, and making sure oil and water levels are okay.” But sitting still? That’s not for her. “Starting in September, I’ll begin my training to become a mechanic. One day a week theory, the rest hands-on in the workshop. I’m really looking forward to learning more and taking on more responsibility. I usually pick things up quickly, so I’m ready for a new challenge. That’s something I’m always looking for.”

"I’d really love to see more women in the industry."

Independence comes first

She prefers working independently. “What I enjoy most is when something is handed to me and I get to solve it myself. That I can do my own thing. That’s how I learn the most.” And even though she’s the only woman in the workshop, it doesn’t bother her. “At work, I just feel like a colleague. I don’t constantly think about being a woman among men. I want to be judged by my work, not by how I look. At a previous job, people looked at me strangely because I wore nail polish. Here, no one cares. Thankfully.”

Passion for Trucks

She also values the team around her. “There are a few colleagues I get along with really well. And I love that the team is so multicultural. Some colleagues are used to working with fewer resources, and because of that, they’ve developed clever tricks and skills they now apply. They’re often incredibly driven to solve things as well as possible. I learn a lot from that.” About her future, Desireé says: “I hope to get my truck driver’s license someday. Maybe I’ll combine wrenching with driving. There are plenty of opportunities at Kleyn. For everyone – and yes, also for women. It would be great to see more girls join. You need a bit of courage, but if you like to get things done, this is the place for you.”
